Now in our second century of providing
quality moving and storage services to New York.
About Us
The origins of Despatch, LLC go all the way back to New York in 1890.
Despatch is actually a Dutch spelling of “dispatch” making
us quite an old Knickerbocker for sure!
Throughout the last century, the company has withstood the test of
time by delivering a top-quality moving and storage service at a fair
price. Customers of Despatch Moving and Storage include Manhattan’s
elite, the finest corporations, and people from every walk of life
as well.
Soon after Columbia University moved to its current location, in 1897,
a special relationship was formed between the university, its staff
and Despatch. The Washington Heights Medical Center opened in 1928.
With Despatch’s warehouse then conveniently situated at 108th
and Broadway, between the Morningside Campus and the hospital and
with the company’s growing reputation for service and professionalism,
business between them blossomed.

In
1967, the Zuhusky family bought the company and its warehouse. The
Zuhusky’s had a penchant for hard work and customer service
and the business reflected it, growing and prospering each year. The
company relocated to 130th and Broadway in the early 70’s, buying
a 10 story building specifically built for moving and storage companies.
The company has been family run for over 40 years and we are proud
that customer relationships that were formed years and years ago continue
to this day.
Through its relationship with Columbia, the company developed special
skills in moving technical, medical and laboratory equipment as well
as offices, libraries, faculty and even students. The household goods
division’s superior reputation brought in customers needing
to move locally, nationally, or even internationally.
In the 1990’s, the management of office records became an important
part of the business and the warehouse quickly filled up with file
boxes from lawyer’s offices, doctor’s offices, local businesses
and, of course, Columbia University. |
The
company was owned and operated by the Zuhusky family until 2008 when
it was sold to help make way for the huge “Manhattanville in
Harlem” development in the neighborhood spearheaded by Columbia.
It proudly became a wholly owned subsidiary of one of the country’s
oldest and most respected moving companies, Morgan Manhattan.
The Despatch commitment to quality service at a fair price under Morgan
Manhattan’s ownership will continue to grow and the future is
bright for one of Manhattan’s finest old institutions …
Despatch. |
